Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said his military is preparing to increase its efforts against al-Shabaab in southern and central Somalia.
"Our troops have forced al-Shabaab from a large part of land in south-central Somalia, and soon we will take over more key strongholds," Zenawi said, Garowe Online reported on Monday (May 21st). He suggested that al-Shabaab-controlled Kismayo may be the troops' next target.
Last year, Ethiopian troops deployed into parts of Somalia and have since forced al-Shabaab from its major strongholds in southern Somalia, such as Baidoa and Beledweyne.
Zenawi said Ethiopian troops will stay in Somalia until the threat of al-Shabaab decreases.
