Delegates from 18 countries, including Kenya and Tanzania, attended the opening of a new office at the headquarters of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation in Mauritius, Tanzania's Daily News reported on Sunday (May 20th).
The representatives addressed the organisation's six priority themes – maritime security, trade and investment, the fishing industry, disaster management, tourism and capacity building.
"The current environment of maritime security in some parts of the Indian Ocean is fragile," said Sudhir Vyas, secretary for economic relations in the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, who chaired the committee of senior officials. "The growing number of cases of piracy and armed robbery at sea threaten transportation and trade."
