Tanzania's First Lady Salma Kikwete launched a programme to train more than 4,000 midwives across the country on Tuesday (May 15th).

"The reports show that countries in the southern parts of the Sahara register the highest rate [of maternal complications], showing that only 40% of women in the region have the possibility of delivering in health centres," she said in Dar es Salaam according to Tanzania's The Citizen.

The African Medical and Research Foundation is working with the government to train midwives over three years. The foundation and the government are looking to raise 20 billion shillings ($12.7 million) for the plan.

Kikwete urged improvements in the health sector, saying that additional personnel and facilities are required to deliver a better quality of service to citizens.

The training will increase the number of birthing professionals and reduce the risks of HIV transmission, malaria infection and loss of blood during birth, Health Minister Hussein Mwinyi said.
