The Somaliland Vice President congratulated 1,100 teachers in Hargeisa on Tuesday (May 15th) after they completed a two-year training course designed to improve teaching quality, Somaliland Press reported.
"Teachers are needed to shoulder the heavy responsibilities of fostering students' engagement in education and delivering quality education," Vice President Abdirahman Ismail said at the reception, held at Mansoor Hotel.
Teachers at the primary, secondary and university levels participated in the coursework, which was sponsored by the European Commission, and implemented by Somaliland Teacher Education College in collaboration with various United Nations agencies.
Ismail said the government recruited an additional 2,000 teachers in 2011, and 560 so far this year. The programme aims to increase teacher training in the next three years by 13%.
