The rate of serious crime in Tanzania has dropped 19% compared with the last two years due to increased efforts by police, Inspector General of Police Said Mwema said in Dar es Salaam on Monday (May 14th).

"According to the 2010-2011 report, issues related to terrorism, piracy, human trafficking and other related crimes were well-tackled, despite challenges facing the region," Mwema said, according to Tanzania's Daily News.

Mwema attributed the lower crime rate to strategies by the police force to combat cross-border crimes. He also said Tanzania's police force has joined their counterparts in South Africa to work together to investigate regional crimes.

Human trafficking and piracy remain among the top challenges. Mwema said about 144 cases of human trafficking were reported between January and March, compared with 124 in 2011.

Al-Shabaab and al-Qaeda also threaten the region, Mwema told a meeting with the chairman of the Southern African Region Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation.
