Al-Shabaab fighters abandoned districts in parts of the Galgadud region on Tuesday (May 15th) following reports that Ahlu Sunna wal Jamaa (ASWJ) and Ethiopian troops were moving towards them.
Al-Shabaab fighters left their bases in Ja'ar, Gal-hereri and Bargan along the border of the El Bur and El Dher districts, ASWJ security chief Abdi Hassan Mohamed told UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan. El Bur was liberated by ASWJ in March, and repelled subsequent al-Shabaab attacks in April.
Mohamed said large numbers of al-Shabaab fighters were seen leaving. He called on Somalis to return to their homes now that al-Shabaab has left, and pledged to begin humanitarian and security operations in the vacated districts.
