A senior United Nations official called on the international community to continue supporting the Somali people by building on the effective delivery of aid that helped during last year's famine and focusing on livelihood support.

"Famine conditions are no longer present in Somalia, largely due to the effective delivery of aid and the good harvest at the beginning of the year, but the humanitarian situation remains critical," Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Catherine Bragg said Saturday (May 12th) after a five-day visit to Somalia and Kenya.

The number of people in need of food aid decreased by 1.5 million, but 2.5 million remain "in crisis", Bragg said.

Bragg, who is also the UN Deputy Emergency Relief Co-ordinator, said the UN was collaborating with other key actors, including Turkey and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, to provide relief in Somalia.

"The local and international aid workers collaborating in Somalia have proven they can make a difference," she said.
