Several United Nations agencies signed a memorandum of understanding with the Somali government on Friday (May 11th) pledging to enhance human rights in the country, UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported.

The agreement was conceived at the request of the Somali government, and will facilitate improvements in seven key areas, including strengthening the rule of law and the administration of justice, protecting vulnerable groups -- including women, children, internally displaced persons and journalists -- and the implementation of international human rights treaties. "

The technical assistance will be delivered in a manner that ensures national ownership, participation, transparency and the inclusion of relevant stakeholders, especially in regard to the priority accorded to each thematic area," the agreement read.

The agreement was signed in Mogadishu by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Political Office for Somalia and the Somali government.

Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali voiced his government's commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights in a statement to journalists following the signing.
