Nairobi's water supply will continue to be affected by interruptions over the next two weeks after flooding destroyed a major pipeline from the Sasumua dam to the southern and western parts of the city on Tuesday, Kenya's Capital News FM reported on Saturday (May 12th).
Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company Managing Director Philip Gichuki told reporters that the affected areas would receive water for 36 hours each week. He cautioned that city residents would need to use water sparingly, though he vowed the price of water would stay the same.
"This is an emergency and we will take care of the expenses that are going to be incurred though we cannot say how much this is going to be," he said.
The affected areas include Karen, Westlands, Gigiri, University of Nairobi, Lavington, Kawangware, Upperhill, Kenyatta National Hospital, Dagoretti Corner, Ngong Road and the Department of Defence.
The Sasumua dam is the second largest in the country, pumping 60 million litres of water daily and supplying two thirds of the water in the Kabete reservoir to the west of Nairobi.
