Somali National Forces and Kenyan troops captured a foreign al-Shabaab commander on the outskirts of Hosingow in the Lower Jubba region as he attempted to cross the border into Kenya, local officials said on Saturday (May 12th).
The suspect is believed to be a commander of foreign fighters in al-Qaeda who has taken part in battles between al-Shabaab and the Somali Transitional Federal Government (TFG), the Somali National News Agency reported.
"[The suspected al-Shabaab commander] is white, and he does not know the Somali language well. He speaks Swahili and he told us he is from Tanzania, but was born in Mombasa, Kenya," Mohamed Ali Osman, a member of the TFG security forces in Jubba regions, told Dayniile news agency. "We will let you know his name and further information after we are done with the investigation."
