Fifteen people drowned in Kenya this week due to heavy rains and flooding, among them seven children who were swept away while walking to school, Kenya's Daily Nation reported on Thursday (May 10th).

The foundations of roads weakened after rain permeated the edges, Road Minister Franklin Bett told an international engineers conference in Nairobi. The rains have resulted in potholes and gullies, he said, adding that the Ministry of Agriculture and others related to tilling lands should discuss ways to prevent land erosion, which results in flash floods increasing speed and causing additional damage.

Ministry of Land geologists have urged residents to leave Kittony, Embobut and Kakisoo villages as rains erode the land and increase the danger of landslides.

Heavy rains in Kenya over the past two months have caused an estimated 10.6 billion shillings ($127 million) in damage and displaced more than 60,000 people.
