Pirates seized a Greek-owned ship off the Omani coast on Thursday (May 10th) and are now reportedly heading for Somalia, the Athens-based operating company said.
The Liberian-flagged tanker Smyrni was carrying 135,000 metric tonnes of crude oil when it was captured. It is reported to have about 15 crewmembers onboard, comprising Indians and Filipinos, according to the BBC.
"No communications have been received from the ship since the ship was boarded," Dynacom Tanker Management said, adding that "all relevant authorities" had been notified.
The hijacking comes as pirate activity is decreasing in the Horn of Africa region due to increased security onboard ships and patrols by international forces.
