Kenya's Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Board has granted 21 locally owned software companies 4 million shillings ($48,000) to develop applications for public use, Business Daily Africa reported on Wednesday (May 9th).

The grants will be used to develop practical applications such as monitoring patients taking medicines, locating a restaurant or other initiatives that facilitate daily life. The government plans to tap into the applications to incorporate some of them into its e-government programme.

"We need applications that can be able to offer Kenyans solutions and help us create internal efficiencies. By so doing, we will save the economy billions of shillings," said Information Permanent Secretary Bitange Ndemo during the grant-awarding ceremony in Nairobi.

"Our aim is to not only scale up the existing local ICT businesses but to support start-ups like those [granted awards] today," said ICT Board chairman Paul Kukubo.
