Tanzanian Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda announced on Tuesday (May 8th) the new list of 133 district commissioners including 63 re-appointments.
After complaints of corruption spurred President Jakaya Kikwete to reshuffle his cabinet this week, Pinda drew attention to the problem among district councils.
"There have been a lot of complaints over the misuse of public funds in district councils," he was quoted as saying by Tanzania's The Citizen. Pinda directed the commissioners to submit their reports in August to be verified by regional commissioners. He also said the government will review the recent Controller and Auditor General report, which highlights irregularities in public spending.
"I believe that if we work that way, there will be improvement on the expenditure of public funds," Pinda said.
Pinda said he strived for diversity in appointing commissioners, according to Tanzania's Daily News. Forty commissioners are between 35 and 40 years old, and 30% are women. "The objective is to observe the gender-parity protocol," Pinda said, speaking to newspaper editors in Dar es Salaam.
