Somalia's Joint Security Committee on Wednesday (May 9th) approved a proposal to unify government-allied forces fighting al-Shabaab and al-Qaeda, Africa Review reported.
The forces will operate under the leadership of Somalia's Defence Ministry. The committee, which meets every two months, comprises representatives from the African Union, the United Nations and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, among others. Officials from Puntland, Galmudug and Ahlu Sunna wal Jamaa were also in attendance.
Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, who chaired the meeting, backed the plan, saying the army's central command can lead the forces.
Somali Defence Minister Hussein Arab Issa told reporters after the session that participants called for setting up military camps to host the newly unified forces.
