The government of Japan has donated police equipment to the Somali Transitional Federal Government to support the rebuilding of its police force, Somalia's RBC Radio reported on Tuesday (May 8th).

The Japanese Ambassador to Kenya Shahisa Takeda presented the equipment, which included 16 Land Cruisers, two ambulances, two personnel carriers, bullet-proof vests and combat helmets.

Commissioner of the Somali Police Force Sharif Sheikhuna, Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali and Minister of Interior and National Security Abdisamad Mo'allim Mohamud attended the donation ceremony.

"Japan has many times taken part in giving out the stipends for the police and other police equipment. We hope Japan will continue assisting our police," Sheikhuna said.

Takeda said he was pleased to receive a warm welcome on his first visit to Mogadishu. "Japan's government donated the equipment to help the Somali people, and will continue to support its Somali brothers by providing police equipment in the near future," he said.
