Somali security forces apprehended two men carrying explosives at the Afgoye checkpoint outside Mogadishu on Tuesday (May 8th), security officials said.
"Today, the security forces of the Somalia government have managed to capture and thwart two men wearing suicide belts, with whom al-Shabaab extremists had planned to carry out attacks in Mogadishu," Ahmed Abdullah Yare, a government security official, told Somalia's Shabelle Media Network.
Al-Shabaab has increased its use of suicide attacks in Mogadishu since Somali government forces assumed control over the capital in August 2011. The group has not commented on the seizure of the two men at Afgoye.
