The East African Community Bureau of Speakers approved on Tuesday (May 8th) the creation of a new East African Parliamentary Institute (EAPI) to boost capacity of legislators in the region.
The institute will be folded into the EAC, focusing on building capacity, skills and professionalism within EAC parliaments. The speakers, who gathered in Kigali, urged national assemblies of member states to form committees to promote EAC integration, Kenya's The Standard reported.
The bill proposing the institute's creation has been approved by the presidents of Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya, and is now before Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete.
