A mortar shell fired into a Mogadishu neighbourhood killed seven people and injured nine on Tuesday (May 8th), witnesses and security officials told AFP.
"It was a disaster that shocked everyone," said Dahir Adan, a witness.
Somali security officials confirmed the attack and have launched an investigation. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Abdikarin Gaas, who lives close to the site where the shell landed, said four of the victims are his close relatives. "A mother, father and their two sons have all died, and two others were injured," he said.
Last week, the United Nations, the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development warned against possible peace "spoilers" looking to destabilise Somalia, saying they were "greatly concerned" about attempts to derail implementation of the Roadmap.
