Saudi Arabia donated 90 tonnes of dates to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Djibouti on Saturday (May 5th) to help feed drought victims and Somali refugees, Djibouti's La Nation reported.
Ambassador Abdulaziz bin Ibrahim al-Nofal presented the dates, worth more than $300,000 (53 million francs).
WFP representative Mario Touchette said Djibouti is experiencing its sixth consecutive year of drought, which will only get worse during the dry season over the next five months.
"Prices for staples continue to exceed the purchasing power of poor, urban and rural households that remain highly dependent on imported food for their needs," he said.
The WFP provides food aid to roughly 106,000 people across the country, Touchette said.
