Five underage al-Shabaab fighters have laid down their arms and turned themselves in to Somali Transitional Federal Government (TFG) forces in Daynile district outside Mogadishu, the Somali National News Agency reported on Monday (May 7th).
Daynile District Commissioner Dahir Hassan Hussein said the fighters were guarding a checkpoint, armed with AK-47s, rocket-propelled grenades and ammunition. They surrendered to a group of TFG soldiers manning a nearby checkpoint.
"This is a clear sign to the whole world that the al-Shabaab has no respect for human life," Hussein said. "They recruit underage fighters and hand them weapons that are not meant for minors."
