Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki called on the international community on Wednesday (May 2nd) to assist in the voluntary repatriation of Somali refugees, Kenya's Capital FM News reported.

Refugees should return to areas in Somalia that have been liberated from al-Shabaab through joint efforts among Somali security forces, the Kenya Defence Forces and AMISOM, Kibaki said after meeting with EU Commissioner for Development Andris Pielbalgs. The Kenyan leader called on the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to facilitate the relocation of refugees so they can be home and receive international assistance.

Kibaki said there are 630,000 refugees staying in Kenya's Dadaab camp, which is unsustainable, as it strains national resources. He stressed Kenya's support of AMISOM and the Somali Transitional Federal Government, particularly in their efforts to liberate the country from al-Shabaab and restore rule of law.

The president also called on the EU and other international partners to support the Somali people to stabilise and reconstruct their country.
