A football tournament kicked off in Bosaso on Monday (April 30th) with 14 teams competing from across Puntland's Bari region, Somalia's Garowe Online reported.
The tournament is funded by local businesses and civil society organisations as a way to inspire teamwork in young people and direct them away from criminal activities, including piracy.
The opening match between Bosaso and Gumbah on Monday had a huge turnout, with Bosaso winning 2-1.
Grassroots efforts such as football tournaments will help steer young people away from piracy, said piracy analyst Zakaria Mohamed, adding that the trend of youth turning to piracy is on the decline.
