Tanzanians celebrated the 48th anniversary of Tanzania's unification of Tanganyika and Zanzibar on Thursday (April 26th) at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
President Jakaya Kikwete arrived at the stadium with a motorcade escort, accompanied by Chief of Defence Forces General Davis Mwamunyange. Kikwete received a 21-gun salute from an honour guard present at the celebration, Tanzania's Daily News reported.
Schoolchildren from around the country sang in choirs and delivered acrobatic performances at the gathering, which was attended by members of the Tanzanian government and thousands of Tanzanians.
In 1964, soil from Tanganyika and Zanzibar were mixed in a ceremony at Uhuru Stadium.
