The African Union Mission in Somalia vowed on Thursday (April 26th) not to let "spoilers" derail the on-going Somali peace process.
"It is important to note that this is the longest period of peace that Somalia has enjoyed since the fall of the central government in 1991," Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia Wafula Wamunyinyi said at a press conference in Mogadishu. "There have been sacrifices to get to where we are and AMISOM will not allow anybody to disrupt the peace process."
He called on Somali citizens to refrain from actions that may disturb the peace achieved in many parts of the country.
Wamunyinyi's comments followed al-Shabaab's threats against traditional elders who have gathered in Mogadishu to select a National Constituent Assembly this week. Al-Shabaab spokesman Ali Mohamud Rage said on Tuesday that elders who have endorsed the government deserve beheading, Somalia's RBC Radio reported.
