The growth rate of Tanzania's information and communications technology (ICT) sector is the highest in East Africa, Tanzanian Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Makame Mbarawa said on Wednesday (April 25th).
The minister, whose speech was read on his behalf by his deputy at a telecommunications forum in Dar es Salaam, stressed that knowledge and innovation are key to economic growth and higher income in the next decade. The government plans to achieve an annual gross domestic product average growth rate of 8% by 2015, Mbarawa said.
The growth of the ICT sector in Tanzania currently ranges between 15% and 20% annually, he said.
Said Amir Said, chief executive officer of Tanzania Telecommunication Company, highlighted the importance of digital technology. "We cannot ignore any longer the actual and potential impact of the digital revolution on the economic and social development of our respective countries," he said.
