The Sierra Leone government remains "unflinching" in the face of al-Shabaab's warning not to deploy soldiers with AMISOM in southern Somalia, Sierra Leone's Ministry of Information and Communications said in a statement on Wednesday (April 25th).
"The al-Shabaab threat directed at the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces is taken seriously," the government said. "Necessary security measures are being put in place to ensure a successful mission by our deployed troops."
Sierra Leone will face retaliation from al-Shabaab if they deploy to regions in the south, Sheikh Abdirahman Muhumed Hudeyfa, an al-Shabaab commander in the Lower Jubba region, said on Sunday.
The threat comes ahead of Sierra Leone's expected deployment of 850 soldiers, which will join the AMISOM force in June to boost the Kenyan army. Last month, Kenyan and Sierra Leonean officials visited Gedo to scout sites for troop deployment.
