The Tanzanian Constitutional Forum is partnering with non-governmental civil society organisation HakiElimu to encourage citizens to share their thoughts on the constitutional reform process, Tanzania's Daily News reported on Wednesday (April 25th).

The Katiba competition will award between 200,000 and 500,000 shillings ($126-$319) to the best compositions explaining what citizens want to see in the constitution.

"We want to encourage the people to give their opinions on the new constitution through writing essays or making drawings and everyone may participate," said Nyanda Shuli, manager of media and advocacy at HakiElimu.

The insights on citizens' perspectives gained from the competition will be referred to the 30-member constitutional review committee, appointed by President Jakaya Kikwete earlier this month.

MY OPINION ABOUT CHANGING THE CONSTITUTION IS THAT THERE NEEDS TO BE UNITY IN A CONTRACT THAT WILL UNITE THE GOVERNMENT OF TANGANYIKA AND THAT OF ZANZIBAR. WE NEED THE PRESIDENT OF ZANZIBAR TO BE RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. THE SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION SHOULD BE UNDER ZANZIBAR ON THE PART OF ZANZIBAR.
