The City Council of Nairobi was awarded an International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) certification for service delivery on Tuesday (April 24th), following its efforts to reform government services and introduce e-payments.

"The City Council of Nairobi has become the first urban centre in East and Central Africa to receive the ISO certification," Town Clerk Philip Kisia said as he accepted the award at City Hall. "However this great victory and honour comes with a catch -- every six months the process will be reviewed to ensure compliance, so there is no room for sleeping."

Kisia said his team has brought reforms in five key sectors including finance, information communication technology, planning, asset valuation and human resources. He also cited his success in dismantling corrupt cartels.

Kisia said the council's revenue would increase by 5 billion shillings (about $60 million) once the e-payment system is launched in the next few weeks, Kenya's Daily Nation reported.
