Flash flooding around Kenya has killed at least 17 people and displaced more than 60,000, Kenya's The Standard reported on Tuesday (April 24th).

Kenya's Red Cross Society warned that conditions are increasingly difficult for people living in heavy-rainfall areas. "The Society has activated its flood watch system and pre-positioned its non-food item stock as part of early action and preparedness for early recovery and less impact," said Nelly Muluka, communications manager for KRCS.

At the weekend, seven people were killed by flash flooding in Hell's Gate National Park, seven were killed in mudslides in Gwasi, and three others died in Mlolongo and in the Tana River when waters carried them off.

Several areas of Kenya have been affected by the flooding, including the Bomeni division of Taita Taveta County, where 100 houses have been submerged and 55 swept away by the rising water.
