European Union Ambassador to Tanzania Filiberto Ceriani Sebregondi called on the Tanzanian government on Monday (April 23rd) to quickly approve a pirate-transfer agreement.
The transfer agreement gives pirates the right to trial in their home country, regardless of where they are captured or brought to land. The Seychelles, Kenya and Mauritius have already approved the agreement, Sebregondi said, according to Tanzania's The Guardian.
He stressed that the agreement would benefit the economic, social and political environment of the country.
"Piracy is the current economic challenge in the region," Sebregondi said at a press briefing in Dar es Salaam. "Tanzania has an important role to play in supporting efforts made by other countries in fighting against pirates. It would be wise for the government to approve the document as fast as possible."
