Somali pirates have released Italian tanker Enrico Ievoli, which was captured off the coast of Oman in December with 18 crew members on board, the Italian Foreign Ministry announced on Monday (April 23rd).
An Italian warship met the tanker after it came out of Somali waters, with armed marines sent aboard to protect it during the remainder of its journey.
"This incident is further confirmation of the gravity of the security threat posed by the phenomenon of piracy," said Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi.
Terzi was quoted as expressing his "great satisfaction" with the release of the tanker and said it was part of a wider diplomatic effort carried out with Somali authorities in recent months.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti had called on his Somali counterpart Abdiweli Mohamed Ali in February to do "everything in his power" to ensure the release of the ship, AFP reported.
The Enrico Ievoli is the fourth Italian vessel freed from Somali pirates since November.
