A dam under construction in Tanzania's Arusha province is expected supply potable water for an estimated 5,000 area residents and 20,000 cattle, Tanzania's The Guardian reported on Saturday (April 21st).
French firm Sogea-Satom, which is rehabilitating the Arusha-Minjingu highway, is constructing the dam, valued at 100 million shillings ($63 million). The firm's public relations officer Jamal Nassoro Addi said the dam will be complete in about two weeks, with a projected lifespan of 120 years.
The dam will be located by Nanja village. "This area is ripe for livestock keeping and once we have water, we will be able to progress," said village chairman Ting'ide Shamburi.
Nanja village women's spokesperson Rehema Sangar' said, "I am happy because our plight of waking up in the wee hours and walking 15 kilometres every day in search of water will become history once the dam is completed."
