Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed welcomed the newly appointed Palestinian envoy to Somalia Kamil Abdullahi on Saturday (April 21st), the official Somali National News Agency reported.
Ahmed held a reception at the State House in Mogadishu to welcome the Palestinian representative. The Palestinian government has not had an envoy in Mogadishu since the Somali government collapsed in 1991.
"Palestinians and Somalis are like brothers and we hope for better co-operation with Somalia," Abdullahi said, adding that the government will soon open an embassy in Mogadishu.
Turkey, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Libya, Sudan and Yemen are the only other governments to have operational embassies in Somalia.
"We call on other brothers in Arab countries to come and re-open their embassies in Mogadishu," said Somali Foreign Affairs Minister Hamid Sheikh Ali Malsheye, according to RBC Radio.
