The African Union Mission in Somalia announced on Friday (April 20th) that it has taken control of al-Shabaab bases outside Mogadishu.

Burundian soldiers under AMISOM forces seized parts of Banadir district late Thursday night, including the Daynile airstrip, as part of its mission to drive al-Shabaab out of Mogadishu.

"The operation was necessary to deny the extremists a platform to target the people of Mogadishu," AMISOM said in a statement.

"The international community has mandated AMISOM to secure Somalia so its people have the opportunity to select a form of government that is best suited to them," said AMISOM Deputy Force Commander Brigadier General Audace Nduwumunsi. "By securing the strategically important Daynile airfield, we have made a big step towards making this a reality and helping create the necessary conditions for reconciliation and reconstruction."

Daynile allows access to the Afgoye corridor, where an estimated 410,000 Somalis are still living under the control of al-Shabaab.
