A man was sentenced to 12 years in prison after he was found guilty of child trafficking, UN-funded Bar-Kulan reported on Sunday (April 15th).

Ibrahim Omar Leban was convicted in Bosaso for trafficking nine children between the ages of seven and 14, eight of whom are girls, to Yemen to work.

Judge Sheikh Aden Aw Ahmed, who presided over the case, gave custody of the children to Tadamun, a local organisation, until their families are found.

Puntland officials say that following awareness campaigns, they are now more vigilant about kidnapping and trafficking cases, Garowe Online reported

Peace be upon you. If it is true that he was sentenced to such penalties for the crimes he committed, then I think he was wrongly sentenced. I would have sentenced the man using either of the two following options: First, I would have sentenced him according to the Islamic law. Secondly, I would have sentenced him to life in prison. The parents of the children he was trafficking would have also been called to take part in the decision to punish him. This man must have been involved in child trafficking business for a long time.
