Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga announced on Thursday (April 12th) that the Kenyan government is formulating a new National Health policy to address the rise in non-communicable diseases among the public.
"As we consolidate gains we have made in controlling infectious diseases, we must also strengthen our systems to face this new threat of non-communicable diseases," Kenya's Capital FM News quoted Odinga as saying while presiding over the launch of a diabetes management and treatment project in Dagoretti.
The prime minister said that the cost of health care was increasing, and stressed that the government should develop an affordable alternative.
Non-communicable diseases account for almost half of the hospital deaths in Kenya, according to Minister for Medical Services Anyang Nyongo.
