About 850 of the troops battling al-Shabaab from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will return home to meet Kenya's quota of service under AMISOM, Kenya's Daily Nation reported on Friday (April 13th).

The soldiers will return to Kenya after a contingent of Sierra Leonean forces arrives to replace them after June.

Currently, about 4,600 Kenyan troops serve in Somalia. In October, Kenyan forces entered the country to fight al-Shabaab, folding into AMISOM in March.

The remaining Kenyan soldiers will fight alongside the Sierra Leonean troops in Somalia's southern Sector 2, under the command of a KDF brigadier.

As part of the change, President Mwai Kibaki this week appointed Major General S.N. Karanya to be AMISOM's deputy force commander in charge of operations. KDF spokesman Colonel Cyrus Oguna will move to Mogadishu to serve as AMISOM'a military spokesperson. The head of military intelligence at AMISOM will also be Kenyan, the paper reported.
