Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said his government is ready to help Puntland secure its borders against al-Shabaab, Somalia's Shabelle Media Network reported on Thursday (April 12th).
"We are committed as the Somali government and the Puntland administration to clean al-Shabaab militants tied with al-Qaeda out of every position they are in the country," Ahmed told a press conference in Mogadishu.
On Friday, al-Qaeda allied al-Shabaab urged followers to open a new front in Puntland amid reports of militants fleeing southern Somalia after losing their strongholds.
"The people of Puntland must join the struggle like the people of southern Somalia to defend the will of God," Sheikh Abdulkadir Mumin, who issues Islamic decrees for areas under al-Shabaab control, said Friday in a broadcast on the movement's Radio Andalus.
According to the broadcast, Mumin left in recent days the al-Shabaab-held Afgoye region outside Mogadishu for the north along with "a large number of young fighters who come from the Puntland regions".
Earlier this week, Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamud Faroole said that al-Shabaab militants have been regrouping in Puntland, especially in the mountainous part of the region.
Ahmed said that the Somali government is prepared to meet this issue. "There is a military plan set up to launch offensives against militants who are regrouping in the Galgala Mountain Range in northeast Puntland," he said.

It is a good idea for the Transitional Federal Government and Puntland to support one another in the fight against Al-Shabaab and in the liberation of the poor young children they misguided.
Peace on to you. The issues said by Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmad are typically the function of the central government. Both, the central government and the regional government enjoy the relational functions of supporting of each other. This is simply the assistance the president is saying he gave to Puntland but is misunderstood by many people though, I can’t exactly say the kind of assistance he can give to Puntland when he needs the assistance himself.
