The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) announced on Monday (April 9th) that it fired employees who refuse to return to work following a strike over the weekend, Kenya's Capital FM News reported.

"All workers who are still engaged in the illegal strike have been deemed to have deserted duty and are summarily dismissed," the KAA said in a statement.

The KAA said that more than 80% of its 1,500-member unionised staff had returned to work following a brief strike that began on Friday.

"We take this opportunity to assure the general public that operations at all our airports have continued with no interruptions," said the statement. Management and government agencies had contingency measures in place during the strike, it added.

Nicholas Baraza, secretary general for the Aviation and Allied Workers Union, said the strike is still on-going. "Until and unless we agree with the KAA on a return to work formula, there is no way our members are going to go back to work," he said.

The union said on Monday it will persist in its call for a 25% pay raise for employees.
