Al-Shabaab member Hasan Dahir Aweys has criticised the militant group for aimlessly killing civilians and for its affiliation with al-Qaeda, the Somali National News Agency reported on Sunday (April 1st).
Aweys, former leader of the Somali Islamist radical group Hizbul Islam, told a group of close associates in Elasha Biyaha on Saturday that al-Shabaab's alliance with al-Qaeda could not be accepted and accused the militants of shedding innocent blood without reason.
He said residents are afraid of al-Shabaab because of its wanton violence, which has denigrated al-Shabaab's mission, adding that the militant group should have taken precautions not to involve civilians in its battles.
This month, al-Shabaab leader Omar Hammami, also known as Abu Mansoor al-Amriki, expressed dissatisfaction with the group in a video posted online detailing fear for his life.
