The Kenyan foreign minister has been evacuated from Mali where he had been stranded following a military coup, Kenya's foreign ministry announced on Sunday (March 25th).
The minister and other government officials were flown to Lagos on a chartered flight late Saturday after the coup's leader said he would guarantee their safe return, AFP reported.
"The government successfully managed to charter a flight to evacuate the minister after securing clearance from the Mali military authority in charge," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula was attending an AU peace and security meeting in Bamako when soldiers seized power on Thursday and closed the borders.
The 54-member African Union has condemned the coup and suspended Mali's membership until it restores constitutional order.
