Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula is among several African foreign ministers stranded in Mali on Thursday (March 22nd) after a military coup displaced President Amadou Toumani Toure, Kenya's The Nation reported.

"The government is in touch with the Kenyan delegation and is keenly observing the unfolding scenario and awaiting for more information on the state of security," the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement, adding that it is trying to "establish contact with the interim authority that is reported to have taken charge in a bid to have the Kenyans evacuated".

Foreign ministers from the African Union were in Bamako for a meeting on regional peace and security on Thursday, when a group of Malian soldiers seized power. The soldiers announced on television the dissolution of state institutions and suspension of the constitution, adding that they had seized the presidential palace and arrested several ministers after a gun battle.

Wetangula said the situation in Mali was unravelling. "Situation worsening, curfew imposed. Airport closed. Heavier gunfire can be heard repeatedly," he posted on Facebook.
