Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni promoted Major General Andrew Guti to the rank of lieutenant general on Tuesday (March 20th), sending him to Mogadishu to take over command of AMISOM, Uganda's Daily Monitor reported.

Major General Fred Mugisha, also Ugandan, was replaced as the head of AMISOM one year ahead of schedule, in accordance with new procedures requiring the commander to hold the rank of lieutenant general.

Ugandan army spokesman Colonel Felix Kulayigye said Mugisha could not be promoted to lieutenant general because Mugisha was promoted to major general less than a year ago.

Kulayigye said that Guti, former commander of the Senior Command and Staff College in Kimaka, will head AMISOM with two majors-general from Kenya and Burundi as his deputies.

Guti will command almost 18,000 troops from Djibouti, Kenya, Burundi and Sierra Leone, which will join AMISOM after June.

Its good enough because the deplyment of such a force will trade space for Somalia's future and rid the region of foreign terror groups. Its now upto the Somalis themselves to start building governing structures to ensure that local administration and other arms of government mature along side the Mission

I think Kenya was in a better position to lead the command given its great achievements in fighting the al-shabab,a lot of the people including the us have tried initially with little success. Please consider giving Kenya a chance thanks Ug/Bur also for a good job
