Kenya announced on Saturday (March 17th) that the next general elections will be held March 4th, 2013, ending weeks of heated exchanges between rival politicians, AFP reported.

"We are going by a constitutional court ruling...which requires us to hold elections 60 days from when the parliament term ends," said Ahmed Issack Hassan, chairman of Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

However, the court also said elections could be held sooner if there was a written agreement between President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to dissolve their coalition government.

The IEBC said it had not received a decision on that matter after meeting with the two leaders, and so it went ahead with the step to set the date.

"It has become apparent to us that they do not intend to dissolve the coalition.... There is a disagreement amongst them on when polls should be held," Hassan said. "That is why we took it upon ourselves to fix the date."

BOTH THE RIGHT HON. PRIME MINISTER & H.E. THE PRESIDENT ARE POLITICAL COMPETITORS. RAILA & ODM WANTS TO ASCENT TO PRESIDENCY WHILE KIBAKI WANTS TO ENSURE PNU TAKES PRESIDENCY. IF RELIED UPON ON ELECTION DATE, THERE COMES YET ANOTHER CONFUSION. THE IEBC SHOULD LEAD THE WAY, BUT THE WAY SHOULD BE IN LINE WITH THE RECENTLY PROMULGATED CONSTITUTION OF KENYA AND SHOULD BE SEEN AS JUST BY MAJORITY OF KENYANS.
