The Somali cabinet held an emergency session on Thursday (March 15th) after Wednesday's suicide-bomb attack killed five people at the presidential compound, Somalia's Shabelle Media Network reported.

The closed-door meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, after which government spokesperson Abdirahman Omar Osman "Yarisow" read a statement identifying the bomber as Omar Garweyne, the news agency reported.

"A member [of the staff] from the office of the president… helped the bomber reach the palace area," AFP quoted Yarisow as saying. The bomber crossed through three checkpoints, after which he detonated his explosives vest, killing himself and five others, including his accomplice, AFP reported.

Al-Shabaab claimed credit for the attack and called on Somalis to "take part in the war against the infidels and the apostate government", al-Shabaab spokesperson Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage said late Wednesday, according to AFP.

Al-Shabaab has resorted to guerrilla tactics after abandoning its bases in Mogadishu in August.
