Because Somalia is a dry country, famine and drought have become the norm. People can live for up to two years without getting a single drop of water on the ground, making it one of the hottest places in the horn of Africa. Since almost all the people in Somalia are herders, they have never thought of cultivation, thus making their life difficult. A few Somalis who have had a chance to grow crops have been affected by Al-Shabaab, because this group seizes anything that seems profitable or beneficial to them. Although Somaliland is a dry country, it still receives rain from time to time, which if well sustained will be beneficial to that country, and it will be able to properly feed its people, even though the terrorist threat has contributed to the weakening of the economy for a while now. The government of Somalia should ensure that there are crop irrigation projects after securing control of the country. It should also motivate people to take up cultivation. This way, they will be able to generate more income for the Somali people while making famine and poverty a thing of the past.

African Union troops have helped a great deal to maintain peace in some regions of Somalia, and especially in the capital city, Mogadishu. Even though they have not succeeded in completely wiping out that terrorist group, they have been able to protect the capital city from a number of attacks, although there are times when they have failed or they have been overwhelmed. However there are instances where peace keepers have retreated to the capital city out of their own safety, because the Al-Shabaab group sometimes overpowers them. Even so, since Somalia and Kenyan troops went into Somalia in “operation Safeguard the Country”, that terrorist group has been forced to move deeper into Kisimayu town in fear of those troops. Although some Kenyan and KDF troops have lost their lives in that war, a lot of Al-Shabaab followers and militia have been injured time and again and some of them killed in the fighting. Since they entered Somalia, there has been peace in some Somalia towns for the time being, knowing that this is because of the soldier who are fighting to secure their freedom and safety.

Even though a humanitarian organization has been and is still trying to help people in Somalia, it is facing a lot of opposition from al-Shabaab, thus there is no possibility of taking its services to the people of Somalia. We cannot say that those attempts have failed, because many of its officers and offices have been attacked from time to time by that terrorist group, which takes aid and food from them for their own benefit. If this humanitarian organization had been working with African Union troops, or if it had a force to protect it in the course of its work, then it would have at least had the ability to reach all the people who are suffering, and provide them with aid. The sole weakness of this organization is that it did not ask for help in this country, had they asked for help, then it would have saved the people who are suffering from the menace of Al-Shabaab.
