Puntland authorities have expressed concern about an increase in al-Shabaab threats in the region, Somalia's Shabelle Media Network reported on Wednesday (March 7th).

The Puntland administration has made security improvements, but al-Shabaab and al-Qaeda-affiliated militias have threatened to plunge the state into insecurity and violence, said Ahmed Omar Hirsi, spokesperson for the Puntland government.

On Saturday, the al-Shabaab-allied Golis Mountain Militia launched a series of attacks on Puntland's security forces, killing five security officials.

Security forces have been placed on high alert across Puntland to prevent attacks from the terrorist groups. Hirsi said the Puntland government opposes the deployment of African Union troops in the region, saying the state is not ready for foreign intervention at this time.

It is a must for Puntland government to defend its territory and should not negotiate with anyone. Puntland government does not want any foreign soldiers to come in its territory when it has over 10,000 soldiers of its own. Thank you.
