Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete stressed the government's commitment to gender equality on Sunday (March 4th) before an international gathering of people climbing Kilimanjaro to bring attention to violence against women, Tanzania's The Citizen reported.

"We will not falter in this endeavour; I am ready to work with my colleagues in other countries to promote this noble cause in the African continent," Kikwete told about 90 representatives from 36 African countries, adding that gender violence blocks societies from development.

Kikwete praised regional leaders for uniting to fight gender violence, and cited the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, better known as the Maputo Protocol, which 46 AU states have signed and 28 of those have ratified.

"Today, the protocol is used as an important tool for holding governments accountable on the commitments we have made," Kikwete said.
