The tenure of the Somali Transitional Federal Government will end August 20th, and will not be extended, Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali said in a press release on Wednesday (February 29th).

"The international community and the people of Somalia are dedicated to see the end of the transition period by August 2012 so that Somalia would form a new government that is at the service of its people. The plan for the transition is ready which is the roadmap and the agreements of Garowe I and II," Ali said, referring to recent agreements among Somali regional leaders to establish a representative federal government.

The Garowe agreements of November and February outline principles for forming a constitution and a bicameral parliament for future administrations. "The Garowe meetings have brought the Somalis together [to] take a common stand on the ratification of the constitution, as well as reform the parliament," Ali said.

Ali also praised progress in security, highlighting the liberation of Mogadishu, Beledweyne, Baidoa and other areas from al-Shabaab, and added that Somalia's "good governance" has drawn the attention of the world.
